Unlike most of your posts, this is one that I find lacking in nuance. I agree that many so called hippies engaged in "spiritual bypass," not wanting to see and deal with the harsh realities of our society. But I was an anti-war activist during college, and have remained active all my life, in the women's movement, the environmental justice movement, the fight for democracy etc. at the same time as also investing in some of the alternative health and culture that the hippies introduced. I think self-care is important in long term activism, to avoid burning out and losing perspective. I admire that many black women anti racism activists insist on practicing joy in their activism.
