In Germany, the majority of people who went along, not committing Nazi violence themselves but not resisting it either, are called the "mitlofer." Those who went along. Afterwards they said we didn't know or we suffered too, and it took a lot of education and effort to understand and start to take responsibility for what they allowed to happen. We in the USA have never taken real responsibility for the genocide of the native peoples, or for slavery, or Jim Crow terror and now there's a powerful movement intent on rewriting history so we don't have to face the evils that happened.
