I think dissent is essential and understand you are trying to bring nuance to this topic, but I am referring to the current laws being passed that history and social studies teachers have to censor NOT opinion or interpretation, BUT FACTS that might make people uncomfortable: The facts of slavery, Jim Crow terror, or the struggle for civil rights for instance, the fact that democracy has been partial and has entailed a long violent struggle to include people of color, women, native peoples.
Then there is the removal of books from libraries and school boards and text book companies censoring what can be taught? What do you say to book burning? It seems to fits into this trend as well.
